The Eye of Time: Background to the Novel
A seer journeys to the Heart of the World. Betrayed, injured, and exiled, Weyllan must fulfil his destiny and change the course of history.
This is the tale of the Amesbury Archer, goldsmith and mystic, an eye-witness account of the dawn of the Bronze Age in Britain. Weyllan is called to the Temple on the Plain - Stonehenge - to find a way to make the life-force flow through it again, but his quest to solve the mystery of his grandfather's disappearance proves more dangerous still. As his power grows, so his foes become more fearsome, until he risks everything in a final battle to restore balance to the land.
This story is part adventure, part mystery, and part biography of a man who must have been a legend in his lifetime. It paints as accurate a picture of life in Britain at the end of the Neolithic as you will find anywhere.
Background to the Times
The detail behind the story: landscapes, vegetation, clothing and technology, are as real as I could ascertain. When I say "Weyllan climbed another hill then descended to the river," that hill and that river are there in the landscape for you to walk, should you wish to.
The religion is my own version of a decentralised, pre-deity, animistic belief-set of the sort I would expect to see in this area at that time. It is a blend of rituals and beliefs from Native American, Siberian, and San shamanism and is not intended as definitive in any way.
There is, in contrast, clear evidence that at the end of the Neolithic, societies across northern Europe were becoming larger and more hierarchical, changing from the small egalitarian bands and clans of their hunter-gatherer past to organised tribes with inherited chieftainship and perhaps a semi professional priesthood. But apart from the complexity of monuments such as Stonehenge we have little to tell us where any one region had reached on this long journey. I have included a variety of local versions of government to reflect the state of flux to give the reader food for thought, if nothing else.
